Case Study Two

Project: Amusing America Exhibit

Client: The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society

Challenge: The San San Francisco Museum and Historical Society wanted to create an exhibit to present America's history of amusement parks and leisure attractions. The exhibit would consist of information graphics and memorabilia, housed in Pier 45 of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, and is the precursor of their new museum scheduled to open in The Old Mint in 2007. With help from the San Francisco Public Library, the foundling museum secured a grant of $80,000 to fill 5,000 square feet of exhibit area.

Solution: 3D Visions created the graphics for 32 informative exhibit panels. each eight feet tall by four feet wide. Constructed as four freestanding towers with eight two-sided wings each, the towers host the story told in text interspersed with hundreds of historic photos. Additional panels and signs were designed for the walls to explain artifacts scattered throughout the exhibit, including animated clown heads, business signs, a roller coaster car, horses from a merry-go-round.

The project tasks were:

  • Cataloguing more than 1,400 images (onto 27 CDs);
  • Scanning more than 600 photos and pieces of ephemera;
  • Developing a layout for the panels that is compliant with accessibility and museum design standards;
  • Coordinating with other creative consultants, including the designers/producers of a carousel feature, a mural artist, and a videographer; and
  • Coordinating printing and installaton of all graphic panels.

Products:

  • 32 Exhibit Panels: 4' x 8'
  • Signage
